Catalonia is in Spain. In Catalonia we have two official languages: Catalan and Spanish. Catalan (Català) is a Western Romance language spoken in eastern and north-eastern Spain, chiefly in Catalonia, Valencia and the Balearic Islands. It is also spoken in the Rousillon region of France, in the northwest Sardinian city of Alghero (L´Alguer) and in the small state of Andorra.
Catalan developed from the Vulgar Latin and by the end of the 10th century Catalan was already a fully-formed language, clearly distinguishable from its Latin origins. It appeared for the first time in written documents in the second half of the 12th century (a charter and six sermons); the Homilies d´Organyà, written in the late 12th or early 13th century, is the first extant text written originally in Catalan.
Catalan has survived difficult periods, especially the forty years of Franco's dictatorship, during which public use was banned. During the post-franquism Catalan entered a period of recovery of its use.
Catalan is not a difficult language, and if you already know another Romance language, you should be able to learn it relatively quickly. Catalans will really appreciate your interest in learning their language. We would recommend you take one of the Catalan courses offered by the UAB at the language center, Servei d¡´Idiomes Moderns (SIM).
